Firefighter Corey Comperatore
Firefighter Corey Comperatore was tragically killed during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed on Sunday. Comperatore, who attended the event with thousands of others as part of Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign, died heroically protecting his family. His identity was confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Police.
The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by Secret Service agents at the scene. The FBI is investigating the incident as an assassination attempt.
Governor Shapiro shared his condolences after speaking with Comperatore’s wife and daughters. “Corey was a dedicated firefighter, a loving father, and a committed member of his community. He died a hero, shielding his family from harm,” Shapiro said, noting that flags would be flown at half-staff in Comperatore’s honor.
In addition to Comperatore’s death, two others were critically injured: David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, who are both in stable condition. Dutch, a commandant in the Marine Corps League of Pennsylvania, underwent two surgeries after sustaining gunshot wounds to his liver and chest.
Former President Trump, who sustained a minor injury to his ear, expressed his shock and sorrow on social media. The incident has sparked a wave of donations on GoFundMe, with over $2 million raised for the victims' families by Sunday afternoon.
President Joe Biden extended his deepest condolences to the Comperatore family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. “He was a father protecting his family when he lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic event,” Biden said.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the shooter, positioned on a nearby rooftop, opened fire with an AR-style weapon. GOP Congressman Dan Meuser, who was in the front row, recounted the terror as attendees ducked for cover. Joseph Meyn, a surgeon, assisted in carrying a victim’s body out of the stadium, noting the “bloody scene” and the urgency for medical help.
Authorities are investigating the shooter’s motives and how he accessed the venue with a weapon. The incident has drawn condemnation from global leaders and sparked serious questions about security measures at such events.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his loved ones.
